Picture layout when blog published not the same as preview

Travel Forums System Talk Picture layout when blog published not the same as preview

Hi,

I've searched around for an answer to this but can't find anything that addresses my problem specifically.

I'm writing a fairly standard blog using the 'postcard' template. When drafting the blog I insert pictures in the normal way, and when I preview I can fit two 'regular' size photos side by side in the body of the blog.

When I publish, the picture layout changes and two regular pictures will not fit side by side, instead I get a long column of pics which looks pretty rubbish.

So my question: is there any way of making the postcard template wider so that my pics will fit together properly, and as they are actually shown in the preview?

If so, can I retrospectively change the template for previous entries?

Many thanks

Craig

Hi Craig,

The preview is not intended to show exactly how the layout (or fonts etc) will look, as there are 9 or 10 different options, and limitless options once you consider everyone can customize their own template. We probably need to redo how the preview works altogether as I can see this is confusing...

Now to the widening question, yes, this is possible. Under Template, hit the Edit Template tab. That will give you a page with CSS, which controls how your blog looks. Find the line that reads

#blogcontent {width:68%;float:left;margin-right:1%;}

Making that width a higher percentage will increase the main part of the blog.

I should note though that this will push the navigation down underneat the entry, so you'd also need to edit the width percentage in this line:

#navigation {position:relative;float:left;margin:0 0 20px 0;width:30%;font-size: .95em;background: url(img/8/bg_sidebar.jpg) left top repeat-y;}

Basically for every percent you add to the first, you'll need to remove one here. This is a pretty complex template to edit though, so it might not end up looking that good... you can always just reset the template if it gets really messed up though, so no harm in trying!

Hey Craig,

I'd recommend not changing that template. It's designed to scale up or down depending on the size of your browser window.

Actually, you must be looking at your blog on a fairly small resolution, because on my laptop (1440x900), the photos are actually showing side by side as desired. I can size my browser down to 1200px wide and they still show side by side. So you must be using something smaller than that (plausibly a netbook or similar).

A large percentage of your users will be browsing on resolutions at least 1200px wide, so I'd say it's nothing to worry about :)

Sam,

That worked a treat and sorted out my issues with the picture layout.

Peter,

Thanks for your reply, I changed the template fairly soon after Sam replied so you may have been looking at the updated version. I am using a Sony Vaio laptop, not netbook. Either way the problem is solved!

Thank you both for your help.
