I'm planning a trip for January 2012 with a few mates of mine.
We are flying from UK to Moscow on New Year's Day, then boarding the Trans-Siberian express on the 3rd.
Stopping off for 3 nights in Irkutsk on the 7th and boarding the Trans-Manchurian bound train on the 10th heading for Harbin, China.
We arrive there on the 12th and will spend 2 nights there visiting the Ice & Snow festival.
On the 14th we set off for Beijing and arrive that night for the first of 4 nights.
Here's the tricky bit. We are then planning to get the overnight (24hr) train to Hong Kong and arrive on the 19th (or it may be the 18th due to train scheduling).
Chinese New Year falls on January 23rd 2012 so we will be there for the build up and New Year's Eve. We plan to fly home on either the 23rd itself or the 24th.
My question is really regarding CNY itself. Are the fireworks etc over Hong Kong waterfront on new year's eve or on the 3rd day of the new year? (as I've been told by two different people).
ALSO is it an absolute NO-NO to be travelling down to Hong Kong 3 or 4 days before CNY?
Thanks for your help in advance.
Also, what does anyone think to my trip?
I have been travelling around much of the world but we only have a 25 day gap due to work commitments and really want to see Siberia in the Winter.
