When do you plan to travel, and what route will you be taking?

lets see... must haves for roadtrips.. Try to make sure you bring a gas can with gas in it... since you are in a van, it would be best to strap it to the outside of your vehicle... Fill it before the trip and dont use it unless you run out....
Bring a flashlight. A spare tire of course... AND A JACK. heh, personal experience there.
Whenever I do a long road trip I bring a plug in cooler to keep stuff cool. You can get them at any truck stop in the USA... No ice or mess to worry about like you get with an ice cooler... Join triple AAA if you haven't, the benefits for a road trip are great from discounts on hotels/campgrounds.. to roadside assistance and much more.
other than that.. Nothing I else I can think of other than clothes/personal effects that are a must have.

ok, let me try to recreate this - I thought I was logged in but evidently was not and everything I just wrote was wiped out.
I echo IMonaghan about AA - you can join for about $40 USD and they will send you customized "TripTix," route maps for your trip, as well as state maps for every state you will be travelling.
Ditto also to Quixote, because the time of year matters. You could have very cold or hot weather...also, are you camping, sleeping in the van or in motels/hotels?

here are packing suggestions that have been useful to me in extended travel anywhere in the world.
-convertible pants - long pants that zip off to become shorts and are usually lightweight, easy-care and a good reason to have...
-all-purpose soap, such as Camp Suds, usable for laundry, dishes or whatever
-A breathable waterproof jacket and an umbrella
-depending on climate, layerable clothing such as tank tops, long underwear, short and long sleeve shirts, light and heavy sweaters, jackets, etc.
-all-weather breathable jacket and umbrella
-Ziploc bags - hundreds of uses like food storage, packing items like underwear, etc.
-Wet wipes - also hundreds of uses like before/after eating, refreshing when you can' t take a shower
-disposable utensils, plates, cups, paper towels, and toilet paper
-flashlight and extra batteries - actually, extras for any battery-powered items
-personal health/first aid kit - any prescriptions you need, pain reliever, antacid, anti-diarheal, feminine hygiene and birth control products

As far as pet supplies, don't forget pet carriers, kitty sedatives if needed, bowls for food and water, proper ID in case (God forbid) they get loose or escape) .

hope this helps and have a good trip!

There is a packing list which was largely suggested by Travellerspoint members under the TOOLS tab at the top of the page as well; might have some use :)

To expand on the gas can/jack/spare tire...

- Before you leave, make sure the gas can nozzle fits in your van.
- Make sure, your wrench for changing tires fits ALL 4 tires, and there wont be a suprise oddball bolt that you can't remove.
- keep a couple small blocks of wood or a rock to block your tires, incase of the weird chance you can't find anything to use on the road at 3am.

from experience.... :)
