Hi SweptAway!

Last year I flew to Bangkok. I had almost the same case. But i was just flying out from kuala lumpur. First the airline gave me hard time at check-in - i managed to convince them that is ok. Then 2am bangkok airport, the custom guy didn't want to let me in. I was arguing - calmly - that I was leaving from KL and i want to stay another x time in malaysia. They kept insisting on a bus ticket or airplane ticket. Then I asked kindly if the guy could help me get a ticket. I also wanted to test if they wanted money or just insisting on regulations / showing off the power. At the end, they took me to some supervise in the middle of the night. She wasn't friendly either. They made me wait another hour - they were of course doing nothing - so they could show off their authority over the foreigner. At the end they let me in, but they really wanted to give a hard time.

So it's possible, but thai custom are not known for friendliness and flexibility...

You don't need return tickets for Thai immigration - you need proof of onward travel - they want to be sure you intend to leave.
airlines have been known to refuse boarding to those without necessary travel arrangements booked.

However it depends on your status in Thailand too - if you have certain visas it's not a problem.

so its way better to just get return flights... But Trains and buses, you won't need to have return tickets... I assume Yes, coz I have done this before, several times.

Do some airlines only sell tickets online and not at the airport???

Air Asia, the promos are only available online? That what I was told...

The staff at the HK airport, the one for customer service was an ultra arrogant bitch, so I don't know if she was just too lazy to answer my question or she can't speak English... I wanted to get to Singapore... and I wanted to get the ticket at the counter... she said the tickets are only sold online.... that was after making me wait for more than 1 hour.

The only time I was checked for an onward plane ticket in Asia is when I was flying from Bangkok to Manila. This was using PAL. They even weighed my carry on bag. I was a few pounds overweight. I said wait a minute and put some stuff in my check in bag that was a couple pounds under the max and already tagged. Otherwise they wanted to charge me for being overweight.

(The next time I flew to Manila with about the same items I stuffed a few things in my cargo pants pockets and vest pockets and I had my return ticket already out! They never weighed my carry on bag or asked for the return ticket!)

I would go for a cheap ticket out of Thailand and be done with it!
