Welcome to Melbourne :) Glad you like the weather. Most people here like complaining about it at the moment.. it's all relative really!

You'd be more than welcome to drop by the Travellerspoint office sometime and grab some lunch with the team that's based here :)

Sharing a ride with someone else who has a car is probably the cheapest option.

Flights are pretty darned cheap as well these days. You can get them at around $40 one way. Add to that though, the cost of getting to and from the airport ($16 in Mel for airport shuttle bus, $15.80 for train in Sydney). And depending on the hour of the day the flight prices can be more as well of course.

A bus fare between Melbourne and Sydney start at $60. So you might save about $10 :) This will be a night fare though I think, which means you will need to sleep on the bus. Yes, it's uncomfortable, but on the bright side you'll save on accommodation ;)

Trains are not that cheap. About $90 one way.

Hope it helps :)

cheapest bus at the moment is around $70 overnight to sydney.
However if you are travelling to cairns after syd much better buying the melb to cairns pass $375 that also means you can travel 4 times overnight as well saving 4 nights accom along the way.

Just checked FireFly for a ticket next Saturday, and got $60 with a backpacker discount, or $65 without (this was for the overnight service - day service slightly more).
