Where are u doing your RSA?

I note that different parts of Oz take different RSA's...

That's why I think re what to take...I def don't want to take anything nice as it'll only get wrecked!!

Are u takin backpack or case on wheels?

Hi

Getting worried that i'm over budgeting!

I'm going from London to Russia through to Beijing (via train), Hong Kong, Thailand and then over to Australia and New Zealand. I'm planning to do this in about 11 months and have budgeted to stay in hostels for the majority of the way.

I have budgeted £12,000 ish for the whole trip including trains, flights, accomodation, excursions, car hire, living costs etc. I don't see how people can live on £3500 for the whole year in Australia? Surely impossible?

Does anyone think I am over estimating?

Adam

I'm doing my RSA via www.qhint.com. Yeah each state is different, the one I am doing covers W.A, S.A, A.C.T, N.T & Queensland and was $85.

I have a backpack which is on wheels. I don't plan on carrying it unless I have to....

Yeah i know its a lot, but I have got £6000 saved already and won't be going till May 2012. Just wondered how much you were budgeting for accomodation per night? I have budgeted £20 a night, which is like £5000 for the duration i'm planning to be in Australia!!

For me, a lot of the cost will be travelling to places. For example,
£1500 train from Russia to Beijing
£230 train Bejing to HK
£250 flight HK to Bangkok
£150 train/bus around Thailand
£280 flight Bangkok to Darwin
£2500 getting around Australia and New Zealand, flights, trains, buses, renting campervan.

Do you think i'm over estimating the flight costs??

How much are you planning on making from working?

I'll just pick up whatever work I can get, even if it's just money for me to survive on... I have looked at harvest work which in some cases can be quite well paid so hopefully i'll do some of that and save some cash, plus get my second year visa. I think most hostels are about £20 a night.

I wounldn't think so. I work in travel and know you can get them cheaper, but it depends how far in advance you book them...

£1500 for the train from Russia? Thats really expencive! Have you booked it already?

Have you tried www.seat61.com to see the train fares. The fares are cheap as chips I think 12k is enough but you can never overbudget more the merrier
I am taking 12k with me when I go to australia on a WHD visa for a year but stopping off in south east asia for a month first.

I leave 29th june this year

12,000k? Wow you guys are going to have one hell of a time on that! Especially if you plan to work as well.

For anyone who is paying off their student loan, you need to let the SLC know you will be out of the country (if going for more than 3 months) and provide evidence of how you will support yourself.

I rang them a while ago to query what I needed to do, and said that I wouldn't know how much I would be earning and when! I was just told to fill out the online form with as much info as possible and include a covering letter to explain my circumstances. The form looks more suited to people who have specific job lined up. I was surprised they didn't seem to have a policy specifically for working holidays.

Either way, we only have to pay them anything while in Oz if we earn the equivalent of £15k a year (like the threshold in the UK), think it's pretty unlikely we'll earn that much doing casual jobs, bar work etc anyway

No haven't booked the train from Russia yet. But the one we are looking at takes 15 days (http://www.trans-siberian.co.uk/trans-siberian-three-capitals-ad.html) its the "full on" for two people.

It's the official trans-siberian train, don't think we can get it any cheaper elsewhere.

dbscuba - I will check out seat61.com thanks. Sounds like you're on the same track as me, rather have too much money to enjoy everything than not enough. What's your itinerary?

Tracy - I'm interested to hear why you think we may be overbudgeting on 12k? We have looked at staying in hotels everyday at £20 a night and have allowed for excursions, travel costs etc.

Would be really interested to see how others have budgeted for a year of travelling and how they broke it down :)

Hey my itinerary is as follows 4 nights in singapore then a coach to kuala lumpur my partner and I (she is taking around 6k but will most probably dip into mine haha) want to fly to laos then train back to bankok.
we are not setting time limits for the places we just need to be in bankok for the flight to sydney on 30th july so we have a month. But things could change we always just follow our feet.

Once in sydney we will catch up with a pal and spend about a week there as he told us its a money drain he as lived there for 4 year now. Then move north we are both fully qualified scuba divers and want to dive the barrier reef but only from brisbane up.

Im hoping to be up in cairns for september then towards darwin. down to ayres rock then adelaide (to see distant relatives) Then melbourne see what happens really.

we will work on fruit farms and try to acheive a second year visa.

We just have a rough Guide in our head nothing in stone we always just go with the flow. We enjoy ourselves that way more. :)
