What types of money do people tend to take? I'm going to Thailand for 2 weeks then to Oz. I'm stuck about what forms of payment to take... I was thinking my normal debit card and a credit card, possibly a few travellers cheques? What do people think?

Thanks, Claire

Hi Claire,

Either debit or credit card will work well in Thailand. Note: your bank may charge you much more on withdrawing from credit card.
Both visa and mastercard are widely accepted at cash machines.
In bigger towns and tourist areas, there are plenty of cash machines.

Not necessary to take travellers cheques.

I haven't travelled with travellers cheques in years, so would generally not recommend them. The one problem with money in Thailand I had on Ko Pha Ngan, but this was 11 years ago, and I'm guessing they probably have ATM's there now. Back then I had to do a withdrawal on my credit card to cover the lack of funds an extended stay led to :)

Ace, thanks! So just taking a credit card and debit card will be enough? I'm just scared incase i loose both of these, what do i do? Will this be all i need in Oz too?

Will you be working in Australia Claire? In that case you'll probably have to get an Aussie bank account with corresponding debet card there anyway. That's what I had when I was there, ie. 1 credit card and 1 debet card from back home + the Australian debet card. I only actually ever carried the Aussie debet card around with me + whatever cash I had withdrawn.

I would recommend keeping the debet card and credit card in two different places, which gives you access to card if either is stolen. So if you are carrying your debet card in your wallet, leave your credit card hidden away somewhere in your room, and vice versa.

Yeah I plan on working and I'm having a bank account set up, so yeah okay that makes sense. Thanks for the advice, I feel happier now :)
