Hi guys, I'm going to North america in july/August 2011. I'm going for around 49 days, but not too sure about my itinerary. I've planed to fly into NY, stay there for 6 days, Fly out to San Fran for 6 days, down to LA for 5 days, San Diego for about 3. Here's one of the problem's, from San Diego, I'm debating whether to go to Chicago, or to Toronto. Has anyone been to either and would reccomend the later over the first option? Or is Chicago a better shout compared to Toronto? I'm 19, but don't really drink (the drinking age of 21 over there is a bonus as it'll help me save money!) and know i wouldn't be able to go out 'clubbing', which i'm not too fussed about. After this, i'm going to Michigan.
After Michigan lies the next obstacle. Do I go to Washington DC, or elsewhere? I've been told that there's only really the White House and a couple other attractions in DC. Does anyone have any views on going to washington dc? Or would you reccomend a 'better' place to visit? Or any other places in general to visit.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!!!
hi mate me and my gf are going america end of july, august time.I think we gonna start san fran travel down towards la ,vegas and go to some of the national parks ect. See where we go from there. We are planning to try backpack camp as much as poss to save on costs. We are also using trains and buses also to keep costs down. How u planing to travel about stay ect?
Hi mate, I'm pretty much flying everywhere, and it seem's to work out as the most cost efficient way to get to each city that is long distance. Apart from LA to San Diego as it's £22 return on one of the shuttle bus thing's that they do. For accommodation, i'm going to try couch surfing, basically staying at other people's houses, living on their couch. However, this is the first time i'll be doing it and, although some do allow 2 people to stay, most people's houses will only accommodate 1 person (unless they have stated otherwise). There's a couple of threads on couchsurfing, and the website seem's pretty legit. Other than that, if i can't find anyone to couch surf i will probably be staying in a hostel, Or if worse comes to worse, on a bench lol.
we wanna see as much as we can west side then see what happens. But surely it pretty pricey flying everywhere?Lol i couldn t do that couch surfing it must be scary lol who u going with mate?where u from? Bet i end up on a few benches lol she won t be happy lol cheers rob
same lol, as long as i'm back in ny in time to see the girlfriend and get the flight back its all good lol. It's costing me under £1000 for all the traveling expenses (except the ones in the city like trains to different places and taxi's) so pretty cheap. The most expensive flight, other than London to NYC is $219, all the rest are like $100, $129 and like that. You've just gotta pick the right days to fly really as it's cheaper on tuesday-thursday rather than friday-monday. I think it'll be a laugh to be honest mate lol. It's the cheapest way as well! I'm from Southampton, England, you? Ha, as long as i've got a roof over my head i'll sleep anywhere!
borehamwood just outside london i got a mates at solent . where did u look for your flight prices ? I just can t wait i need to get away. You not gonna travel with the gf ?Have u any ideas what your doing when in la,san d and san fran?
Not too far away then. All of the interstate flights I got from f.Compare, type cheap flights into a search engine and it's usually one of the first ones that comes up, they seem to be quite good or any website comparing flight prices really. Nah, I've just got back from Singapore and Thailand, but her and her best mate are going on to travel Australia, new Zealand and then shes gonna do camp America near NY, the main reason why I'm going to NY twice lol. Literally can't wait to get out and see her again! I don't have a clue really, probably things like Alcatraz and golden gate bridge and places like that in San Fran, may take a cheeky photo of the hollywood sign, wouldnt be a tourist if i didnt do that! Lol, but not sure about everywhere else to be honest. what are your plans?
Hey, I'm from a little north of Chicago and I would definitely recommend going there. I've never been to Toronto but there is a ton to do in Chicago even if you're not 21 and going to be drinking. Depending on when you go you might get to experience the Taste of Chicago and there are always festivals and things going on. Check out this site for more info: http://www.explorechicago.org/city/en/supporting_narrative/events___special_events/special_events/mose/chicago_neighborhood.html and I've been to D.C. twice and loved it. Everything is pretty walkable, I would recommend the Smithsonian museums, they're all really awesome. From there if you have time left and any interest in seeing any more of the states Charleston, South Carolina is a great time. It's an older historic city but there's a great crowd of uni students and it has pretty beaches. More of a diverse hipster scene there. Let me know if you have any questions!
il have to check them out for flights. How was thailand i bet it alot cheaper over there compared to the usa lol? Like u said i don t have a clue either mate im hopin to find out some good attractions, places to visit from this site i dont really want plan to much as i don t wanna put times on places ect. yea i def wanna go alcatraz and def gotta get a pic of the hollywood sign lol. A shame u can t drink out there i turn 22 in june so il def be ok lol .
will just been looking up hostels in aug and there all full up hope i haven t left to late
chicago def sound s like a place will wanna visit. I would love to go to the festivals. Is there many hostels or cheap places to stay at the places u have mentioned that u no of?
Chicago will be somewhat of a letdown after San Francisco! I would pick Toronto. As for Washington, I find it very interesting - much more than just the White House + many very interesting places to see of historical interest in Virginia such as Colonial Williamsburg (2 hours south by car). It all depends on what interests you? If you're into music/theatre/fashion - New York is the place. If it's more historical in nature - Washington & Virginia would be a better choice. In summer there are great beaches close to Washington such as Ocean City, Maryland - summer can be quite hot in that area. Do bring plenty of cash, as the USA is getting more expensive all the time (as an American, I find the rest of the world considerably cheaper right now!)
Generally, public transportation in the States is pretty bad when compared to Europe. The only places you will find decent local transit is in NYC, DC, SF, Chicago, Portland & Seattle.
Terrible local transportation in S. California - land of the auto!
