Check out the King's Hotel, across from Kensington Park. I think technically it's a hostel, but when I stayed there in 2000 it was only $12 USD/night. It was very nice and clean and included free breakfast, and was close to one of the Tube stations (although now I can't remember which one!)
Hi Esther !
Must confess don't know much about London except it's extremely expensive for pretty much everything!! However, had a quick look on the Youth Hotel Association website - you can get a job working with them in a hostel - meet loads of people and your accommodation would be sorted!! Check out the following website:
You could also try going to the student accommodation websites like the following:
This one has various listings including rooms with local families etc. which are available now - it also has students offering advice on what different areas are like - this would be very important for you, since there are some parts of London you really do not want to be in, especially when you don't know anyone yet!
Also, try www.tripadvisor.com - search for London and you can find genuine user reviews for hotels, B&Bs and hostels in London!
Good luck with your job & accommodation hunting - take care!
