Anyone got any experiences with cheap day trips from London? I will be there for just over a week and was hoping to get around on trains and buses to see as much as possible? I will be based in Gravesend. Thanks. (Estimated costs very welcome too ;) )

Last time I was in the UK I got a Britrail pass and travelled around for a week using that. It's a lot cheaper then buying point-to-point tickets once yo get there. I found trains in the UK fairly reliable (except for weekends) with good signage.

The website for passes is www.britrail.net
Train timetables are here www.nationalrail.co.uk

Otherwise a cheaper option would be to visit surrounding towns via bus. I know they can do cheap day return tickets. Maybe someone else can hook you up with a website. I've never travelled by coach before in the UK.

If you've never been to the UK before, I suggest visiting Salisbury(Stonehenge), Bath, Oxford, Cambridge, Canterbury.

Happy travels :)

I used to take buses form London Victoria to go back to uni whilst I was there. Try National Express, they are the leader of bus travel I think in the UK, they do very cheap day return tickets to all surrounding areas.

If you are under 25 you can apply for a young persons railcard which entitles you off a 1/3 of prices of train travel. Although it is 18GBP, you can save this amount on 1 trip even. Eg. I went to Swansea without young persons, 45 pounds, with young persons, around 29, see what i mean?
