My wife and I are planning to travel, in a campervan (CV), across Europe starting Jan-Feb 2012. To make it as cost effective as possible, we were thinking 6 months at a time, Feb, Mar warmer countries, then Apr for transiting towards non Schengen country, then May Jun Jul out of Schengen. All spread out over a few years.
Here is what it might look like;
Fly into say Amsterdam, drive down to Spain Portugal then England Ireland then back to Amsterdam for the trip back, store CV for 6 months or so. (I've read there are lots of places to store CVs)
Italy then Croatia then store CV
Greece then further up north...anyways you guys get the idea....
The reality is that the 90/180 rule is a problem, not only in terms of logistics but also because it greatly complicates the 'bring the campervan across the Atlantic or buy one in Europe" decision.
Anyways here are my questions that I would like advise on....
1- As a non EU person, and given the nomadic travel objectives, will I be able to get a residency permit (RP) in order to purchase a vehicle in Europe?
if yes then what would be the best country?, getting an address, etc.
2- Is it true that once you have a RP in one Schengen country your free to go in all others? Does this include in and out privileges?
3- If I get a RP, will I have to reapply every year?
if no then presumably "the CV across the pond is the way to go.....(about 2800C$, last quote I got)
4- So then if I bring my CV over, How long can I keep it in Europe?
5- Will I be liable for value added tax, at some point in time?
I've tried to locate forums that specifically deal with this....haven't found anything yet...so I'm looking for help.
