Quoting Swept Away
If you can skip Manila, skip it...
I totally disagree with this, there are some great areas to visit in Manila, such as Intramuros and the Chinese Cemetery, among many other things!
Besides this, Manila is a perfect jumping off point for N-Luzon.
The person is doing a Round the World trip, thus the suggestion, skip Manila, conserve your energy and money.
The traffic and the pollution is really not worth the trip to Intramuros or Metro Manila. The simple reality is, Manila needs to reinvent itself, it is in a very very sad state.
The Chinese Cemetery is one of the major tourist attractions...
That is so pathetic. It's a cemetery, I won't visit a Chinese cemetery in China.
First of all, Swept Away, I don't want to offend you but...
Quoting Swept Away
I won't visit a Chinese cemetery in China.
ok, this is your opinion, but:
- while in Paris, you won't visit Père Lachaise?
- while in Egypt, you don't want to see the Pyramids of Giza or the Valley of the Kings?
And sure, it's a major tourist attraction, but still, it's in Manila, a city who everybody is told to leave as soon as possible.
So I'm happy I was a little stubborn, and I had (together with my wife) an interesting morning on this grounds with no other 'tourists' around me...

It`s great diving in the Philippines; i can suggest Anilao and that`s nearby Manilla
but you have many all over the place and many many islands. It is for sure not expensive, whatever you do. If you are into it you can add some days as a volunteer and get to know the people; several nice NGO`s! -snip- Have fun!

Whether you include PI in to your itinerary depends on what interests you. Places on my 'must see' list are Palawan, Cebu and the rice terraces around Banaue.
Hi, yes it is really worth it to add Philippines in your travel. A lot of great places here so you could not spend that less time enjoying in beaches and islands. You could also find great deals such as cheaper fares and cheaper accommodation just be patient to look for one. I suggest you prioritize Boracay, Baguio, Bohol and the Banaue Rice Terraces which is one of the seven wonders in the world.

Hi Dom... well.. it's almost month since you posted the question.. I'm just wondering whether you did pushed through flying to the Philippines.. :D
anyways.. just my two cents.. i'd say the Philippines is indeed worth seeing as it had beautiful place around its islands that is less traveled by the majority of travelers in SEA.. I'd say you can just use Manila or Cebu as your jumping point to see the beautiful place here like Banaue, Vigan, and Bicol in Luzon island, Boracay and Bohol in the Visayas

Thanks everyone for all your posts, been vry helpful.
And Pau, it is still being considered. atm were weighing up whether to see philippines or indonesia instead of going to India. Originally our route was India>China>S.E Asia (Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore> Australia (on a Working HV)
Due to our budget and what we want to experience, we think it might be cheaper to fly straight to china/S.E asia and travel around there instead.
:D Decisions, Dicisions..
Philippines is definitely a beautiful and fun place to visit. If you are traveling to these many countries in S E Asia, don't miss out on Philippines. It is an island of many beautiful cities..You might want to stay there for three days. My family friends could travel to the place when they got their American airways promotional free airline tickets and they enjoyed it completely. The fantastic cities will take you to another world..
