That is really terrible! But I always lock everthing in the safe or in the suitcase. Like karalyzal mentioned it is really necessary to think about your passwords. Maybe you could try to call the embassy for an advice?

I know it is only a small thing but if you go into Properties and Screen Saver, then to 3D text option, click on Settings and it allows you to put upto 20 letters and numbers (including spaces) and use that as a screen saver. I have: Owned by, and my name. You could try a short name and phone number.

My laptop is a bit old and a small part fell off. Easy to replace it but I did not as it is distinctive without it.

UV marker pens can mark it but will not be seen by a would be thief so maybe even write into the surface if you do not plan on selling it in the future?

As said though, best to pack it away (though I will often leave it in use, downloading on wifi.)

Best place to look for a stolen item is in a second hand shop or second hand market, though the thief may want it for themselves. Don't expect any help from the police as most see tourists as nuisances, and they'll be gone home shortly so them and their crime forgotten about.
