When I was in Delhi I stayed in the Tibetan quater Manju Ku Tilla. It is a bit further out from central Delhi but much quieter and as cheap as busy Connaught place and Para Ganj area.

You can take the subway most of the way which I believe now runs from the airport and then take a taxi or cycle rickshaw the rest of the way. If you have your luggage though take a taxi as the rickshaws do go through a very poor part of Delhi.

I like Himalayan House in the Tibet quarter Manju Ku Tilla. Food is clean and nice, its 1000Rs per night and in a lovely spot compared to Connaught place and other central cheap locations as it is located slightly further out but the metro goes very close!

All the best

Head to Paharganj near the main railway station and you will find an array of different styles.
Just wander around and ask. There are loads of travellers around to help.

If you are looking at travelling by trains, try out the Ginger Rail Yatri Niwas near the Railway station just in front of the Ajmeri gate. It is cheap and clean place to stay. For a night’s stay, this is a good option and much better than the Paharganj hotels as the hoteliers in Paharganj may try to fool around with tourists. :)

You don't say what passport you're travelling on (what is your citizenship) nor for which country your immigrant visa is for; Germany, US, India or somewhere else? Indeed, I'm not even sure what an immigrant visa is - you can have a tourist/business/resident's visa etc or you can be a landed immigrant in which case you don't need a visa.
