My girlfriend and I will be going to Asia in august, september and october. We have made the following plan:

Landing in Bangkok
Travel by train down through Thailand/Malaysia to Kuala Lumpur (Perhentian Islands etc. on the way)
Duration: 3 weeks

Stay in Kuala Lumpur
0,5 week
Kuala Lumpur to Ho Chi Minh City by plane

Travel by train/bus up through Cambodia/southern Laos to Hanoi
Duration: 3 weeks

Travel by train/bus/boat from Hanoi to Chiang Mai
Duration: 2,5 weeks

Stay in northern Thailand
2 weeks
Travel by train to Bangkok

Stay in Bangkok
0,5 week

That means 11,5 weeks, starting on august 2nd. By going south at first to Malaysia we hope to avoid the worst of the wet season, and be able to stay at the beaches in Malaysia.

Will it be possible to travel east-west through northern Laos? Or should we rather fly from Kuala Lumpur to Hanoi, and then travel north-south through Laos/Cambodia and then head into Thailand from Cambodia?

Is it possible to travel from Chiang Mai to Burma and back in a short time? Is there anything to see there? If we go out of Thailand for af few days in our last period here, we won't be needing VISA for Thailand at all. For Malaysia we also dont need VISA, and since we're from Denmark, we dont need for Vietnam either, as long as our stay here is under 15 days.

That means, we only need VISA for Cambodia and Laos.

Have I got it all right? :-)

Kind regards

To travel from Bangkok to Malaysia I think you will have to go by bus but check the Thai rail timetable.
If your not visiting any places between HCMC and Hanoi then I would fly in to HCMC - travel by bus south and then cross in to Cambodia - consider Kep, Kampot, Sihanoukville - then head north to Phnom Penh - Siem Reap - cross border in to Laos - travel north - cross border at Huay Xai in to northern Thailand - overnight train to Bangkok.

In Cambodia and Laos work on travelling by bus. It will be lot easier to travel south-north/north-south. Most people will fly out of Hanoi although there is a 24hr bus trip that goes to either Vientiane or Luang Prahbang. Many negative reviews on this bus trip though.

You can travel north from Chiang Mai to the Burmese border. I've been to the border on a day trip out of CM. Many blogs state Burma is interesting to visit as long as your out in the country where the people have less contact with the military regime.

If you enter Thailand by air you get a free 30 day visa. If you enter by land you get a free 14/15 day visa. Given your itinerary I think you will need to consider this. Visa for Cambodia and Laos are not free. Good luck with your planning. Google is your friend.
