My plans r.e Oz have changed slightly. I was planning to go in October and head straight to Melbourne. However my Uncle (who lives in Melbourne) says it will still be a bit cold at that time of year

"Cold" in Australia means that it'll probably be around 5-10 degrees Celsius at night, with daytime temperatures anywhere between 15 and 25 degrees (frequently hitting both on the same day, as the weather is really changeable in Melbourne). In other words, imagine the nicest April weather you've had in the last couple of years in the UK; that's about how it'll be in October in Melbourne. For us Northern Europeans it feels really good, even if it stays close to the coldest they ever get in Australia.
Personally I preferred October in Melbourne over January, as in January there's a gazillion heavily annoying big fat flies everywhere.

Hey there,

I am going travelling to australia from the uk around the end of september. While i have not been to australia before i have travelled to thailand once before & plan to stop over there again on my way to oz.

I could not recommend the place highly enough and had the best time when i was there previously. It is one of the most beautiful parts of the world, incredible beaches, perfect crystal clear water and there's party places and more tranquil type places if you just want to relax. Best of all once you're there thailand is super cheap for food and accommodation. I even did a thai cooking class which was fun.

I've spoken to heaps of people who travelled to thailand on their way to australia & am yet to meet anyone who didnt have a brilliant time. My only other recommendation is if you can to do an arrival package with a company then do that too. I booked an arrival package to canada last year and have booked with a company called Ultimate Oz for my trip to australia. Based on my experience in canada, it was the perfect way to meet people and get set up somewhere safe and feel part of a new life.

Good luck,.

Mark

Once again, thank you everyone for your suggestions. Can't believe how helpful everyone is!

I've definitely decided on Bangkok. Will only be there a couple of days though. Any suggestions as to what to do whilst i'm there?

Hi Mark. Seems like you'll be in Oz at a similar time to me. Have you got any ideas as to where you'll be starting first? x

Hi,

I was thinking of doing the same thing as you and stopping off somewhere first but i think after travelling (and working) a little i'm going to have a "holiday" in Thailand

i'm travelling with two friends at the moment and i land in Cairns 28th September. Hopefully it will be warm enough for shorts haha
We're staying in Gilligans, a lot of people seem to say good things about it, the main complaint is noise from the partying, i don't think that theres going to be much of an issue which that.

Have you got any plans as to what to do when your in Cairns?

Hey Karl

Sounds like we have really similar plans. I'm not gonna stop off in Bangkok now, will probably go to Asia after Oz -providing I have any money left over!

I think i'll be in Cairns around the 4th October, so will most likely see you around. We should keep in touch!

My plan is to head down the east coast, possibly using the greyhound and spend xmas in Melbourne as I have some family there. Other than that I haven't planned a single thing!

What about you?

We most certainly should! How come you decided to go to direct? You flying to cairns?

Pretty similar really but thinking of Sydney over Xmas... Not too sure yet and maybe driving instead of greyhound, need to check into the prices some more!

I'm far too excited at the moment, just got to keep focused on saving haha

Hi Angela

Thanks so much for your suggestions. I've decided against stopping over in Asia now. But am definitely considering doing it after my stay in Oz, so will remember your advice!

Hey Karl

I basically didn't fancy being in Asia completely by myself, would rather do it at the end of my travels when i've gained a bit more confidence and possibly met other people who want to go too. Plus, I want to save every penny for Oz as I know it's gonna be really expensive!

Driving sounds cool, i'm actually still considering whether to get a campervan or not, all depends on who I meet I guess.

I'm so excited too! I booked my flight the other day. I'm leaving on 13th October. What are your plans once you get to Cairns?

Yeah I thinking would be very good, I just wouldn't stop in the middle of nowhere if I got a flat tyre... Couldn't be dealing with a horror film scenario haha

Flights all booked yeah well I've booked my hostel today so that's me booked up in cairns until at least 12th October we'll stay longer just see how this hostel is

Ermmmmmm Green island looks a must and white water rafting is meant to be good up north, other than that nit too sure, you? x
