Travel Forums System Talk FAQ's - Common themes...

As an idea, what about a new page of frequently asked travel questions etc? Maybe the 10 q's most asked so it's not hugely filled out with extra stuff. Something quick and easy and answers stuff asked all the time. Some seem to come up all the time (i.e. type of packpack comes immediately to mind etc), and it would be good if they could be directed at one specific place to look?

You could either take existing threads (removing all the extroneous cr*p from them) or do composite threads of the best advice/ideas.

Would suggest it be mod only to post there to stop it getting filled up with random comments/convo's, but could be added/amended as and when new bits appear.

Make any sense?

I like the idea. We could make a compile of threads on each topic with highlighted excerpts.

Can we come up with a list of FAQs in this thread then? I think a top 10 questions will be perfect to start with.

Here's a few to start the ball rolling:

- What to pack?
- Backpack vs Suitcase
- Film vs Digital

what others??

Hmmmm....

- How much money needed per day? (we could split it off by continent to give people a general idea)
- Best time of year to go to a specific region? (same as above, split by continent)
- What's better, credit, bank card or traveller's cheques? (weigh the pros and cons)
- Where should I keep all my important info? (surprising how many people don't think of giving photocopies of passports to family back home, and putting them in different bags)
- Should I book a hostel/hotel ahead or just wing it?

Those are all I could think of....but then again it's late and my brain doesn't work properly when I know I have to get up early for work!

Cheers,
Katie ;)

Putting another FAQ page may not be so effective, as some or many may not find it because I believe most will just head to the forums and start asking questions.

I suggest that we put a "FAQs - Read me first, you may find your answers here!" thread in each Regional and General Travel forums and make them sticky! Posts in these threads will be moderated and edited before it is displayed to the public.

For example, FAQ thread in Asia forum will only be related to Asia:
i.e. monsoon seasons, places of interests, how much money to bring, etc.

e.g.

Q: When do monsoon seasons occur in South-East Asia?
A: Nov-Mar (north-easterly) ; May-Sep (south-westerly)

This way, whenever a member wants to post something in these forums, they can check the FAQs threads first to see if their questions have already been answered there. And if the member is ignorant enough to post the questions that have already been answered, we will just point him/her to the FAQs thread (and maybe even lock the thread ).

And as the time goes, information will be added and also updated. Once we have gathered enough information in the FAQs threads, it can be compiled into a page and be put in the Travel Help or Tools section. The page will also have links to the FAQs threads so that user can look for the most up-to-date information there.

What do you guys think?

Cheers,
Hien

Could have a "best travel books" review thing.
