My boyfriend and I are going to get to NZ around May/June and will be staying there to work for around 6 months. He is really interested in working at the ski fields and has heard that the above towns are good bases for this. Has anyone been to both and can give some advice on the good/bad points of each place. Skiing, nightlife, accessibility, cost of living, employment opportunities etc.
May/June may be a bit early in the Ski season down here.
Currently NZ has very low unemployment so there should'nt be too many problems getting casual work.
Christchurch might be a good base - a very european looking city. How you been in touch with www.immigration.govt.nz as regards work visas - you may qualify for working holiday visa.
Christchurch feels more like a 'city', is a bit bigger, and has more in the way of amenities, also a bit cheaper to live in. But Queenstown is better for partying, closer to good skiing and boarding, has more adventure activities etc. Christchurch is more accessible if you want to explore the east coast and North Island (decent airport). Queenstown is more accessible if you want to explore the west coast (milford sound, glaciers, etc.)
i wouldnt live in chch if you want to work on the fields its too far away methven is the place to live if you want to work on the canterbury fields (mt hutt)
queenys not a bad spot a bit hyperactive with everyone trying to out do each other.
the better option is to live in wanaka much more user friendly 2 good fields and a sweet little town with a good local crew,
