I have found that by volunteering for events you can greatly reduce the expenses of travel. You usually have to pay for your flight there but once there they usually pay for accomodations and all food. If you are at a international event you meet people from all over the world and make new friends and contacts in that country. If you are nervous about traveling alone you are with a big group and feel more secure. Events usually need people from all walks of life with many different skills. Nowadays events can easily be found online. You will meet many people and the locals will become your friends and want to show you around afterwards. For example, I volunteer at adventure races which are held locally and internationally. Go to the website and look for volunteer and respond and if you dont see it I will send an email asking if they are taking volunteers. Happy travels!!!!!

still you have to pay airfare (it's never cheap).

Hitchhiking, on the other hand, is free.

Hitchhiking doesn't really work for some people. Like me, I live on an island so the only way to get away is by flying or sailing. So I'd have to buy my way of this darn island anyway.

I've worked twice as a "Au-Pair" girl in Germany... If you are a female, not afraid of experiencing a foreign language and culture, it's the best way!!! Of course you still have to pay for the plane ticket, and do some minor house jobs over there, but you are staying at the family's house, eating their food, and they are generally giving you lots of free time (never too much! ;) )... If you are staying for a whole year, generally its arranged through an agency, they might also be obliged to pay for language lessons... (that's depending on the agency...)

do you not get the feeling that the fact they pay for everything means they are pretty desperate to recruit someone for that job? thus it would make me think "what kind of job am i getting myself into!!!????"

Well, true, this is the hardest part... hitching across the water. But... not impossible! While hitching around the world we didn't manage to hitch a ride across the Pacific, but then for example from New Zealand to Vanuatu we did.
And once on the continent (any continent) - there's no better way to go! :)

another way of cheap travel is becoming an airline courier - flights are free but you stay in place only for a few days (sometimes just 1 night).

Not for backpacking as you have to come back to your centre for more jobs.

My friend started to do it after his retirement - he supports his travel by bringing duty free.
