Online reservation is okay. It's convenient and lesser hassle but make sure it is a trusted one especially when it comes to payment. I can't give you an advice on where to stay, though. I'm sorry.

You ought to mention how much your budget price is. Not all of of have the same ideas of what a "budget price" is. Knowing what you want to pay will get you some recommendations that fit your budget. I have been to Malacca but only on day trips from Singapore.

If you are first visiting Singapore or KL you can also book a room through local travel agencies.

Good luck.

Hi,

I went to Melacca once and stayed in Accordion Hotel (or something like that, because I really don't remember it very well now..). Anyway, it's a budget hotel and not a backpacker type one with good location. But Melacca is quite small so you can just easily walk around.

You can book ahead several hostels found in Hostel World or Hostel Bookers or any other websites as well. If you know it won't be a peak season, go show is very much convenient.
Really up to your personal choice.

:)
Cheers,
Seli
