Just had a quick look, and notice there's now an ad below the slideshow. That would turn me off as a potential new user, as it's right there in your face - I hate ads like that. It also, I feel, takes away from the community aspect of TP with an ad now effectively taking centre stage.

Much better in my mind to have ads within the site, rather than on the main page - the main page has to encourage people into the site.

I'm easy....I like it. The photo section at the top is nice.

I'm in FF. I'll check it out in Chrome at home.

A new version is up. Tested that it works in Internet Explorer 9 now as well (sorry, haven't tested the older IEs yet)

The current version also displays different content for logged in vs logged out users. You will see the ad disappears when you are logged in. And also, the signup link is replaced with the familiar block of content welcoming you to the site.

Other things:

  • The slideshow is a lot less buggy (again, not sure about IE 8,7,6 though)
  • The images for "Plan | Book | Share" segments are clickable and load different content on each load.
  • There is more than one quote at the bottom of the page now.

The only thing I haven't fitted in here is a list of recent photo comments or recent blog comments. That was mentioned by Sander in another thread as something that would be missed from the customisable home pages and I can totally understand that. Maybe we can put that content on the main Photography page instead? Currently the only place it's linked is in the "My Photos" page as one of the tabs at the top.

Or maybe I'll create a "News" area that shows on the front page when logged in that can show any comments / important activity since the last visit?

I approve of all recent tweaks, and quite like the logged in view: The block next to the right of the slideshow feels more useful. One nitpicky remark there: Above the "Getting help" sentence, it would be good to add a "Travel advice" sentence, saying something like: "You can ask in the forums, or directly contact a travel helper" - otherwise I foresee the system talk forum being inundated with general travel help threads.

I do still feel that the page as a whole lacks some cohesion (though it's certainly better), and white-space usage is very variable. The worst bit is the ton of white-space above "Recently featured photos" (due to a 20px margin-bottom on #plan, #book, #share on top of an 18px margin-bottom for the .metadata p, followed by a 50px line-height for the h2 - at least one of those margins should be cancelled out), offset by far too little white-space below (#recently_featured_photos has none; give it an overflow: hidden to wrap it around its floated content, and give it a padding-bottom of 15px).

Sweet, made my day :)

And yeah, just noticed the dodgy lack of padding under the photography section yesterday. Will tidy that up to make it match.

In IE6, it doesn´t work at all. All sections are stuck on top of eachother at the top of the screen.
(can´t change to another version at work, due to access problems to webbased tools, in newer versions.)

In Chrome and Firefox, it works fine. Overall I like it.
The Photos in the middle are small, would there be a possibility to have them enlarged, when you go over them with the mouse?

I would take the in the press part down a little bit further, it is really close to the last link (twitter), where on the rest of the page, there is always a lot of space between sections.

Only partly related: but what about a version for Smartphones? (iPhone, Android)

Wow, that's harsh. We'll try to have a decent version for IE6, but can't guarantee it will do all the same things.

It's a good idea, though I think if I do that, I'd better do the same for some other areas of the site. So in the interest of getting it live, I'll probably leave that till later.

Will do

Yep, definitely. We've almost got a mobile site ready to launch. I'll PM you, so you can have a look :) (anyone else wanting a preview, send me a message!)

Hi Peter, thanks for the update. The link works fine, for my Android telephone (Motorola defy). Just missing edit possibilities for the travelguide.

index_new.css on https is still old, missing at least the following rule:
#plan, #book, #share, #blog_features, #forum_features, #latest_review {
float:left;
margin-bottom:20px;
position:relative;
width:300px;
}
splash_sprites.png is also missing
