i am planning to go to new zealand at the end of this year and i am wondering which are the best locations in the country to visit. i am particualry interested in adventure type activities, i would like to try white water rafting for example, and skiing, snowboarding and the likes. Please respond with some ideas of where these are possible.
thanks a lot
The best place to do white water rafting is at Rotorua where they raft the Kaituna river and go over a 7 metre waterfall which is a class buzz. Also one of the cheapest.
Queenstown is the best place for skiing and snowboarding, but it regularly gets fully booked out during the skiing season (in fact all year round), so book ahead. You can also do lots of other activities in Queenstown, but they generally tend to cost more in Queenstown, so do them in other parts of the country if you can.
Taupo is the cheapest for doing a skydive (special offer of NZ$185 when I was there - usual price NZ$215).
Kaikoura is famous for whale-spotting tours, but I would recommend going there for a flying lesson. I paid approximately NZ$95 for a lesson in a 2 seater plane and it was probably my favourite thing I did in NZ.
Other cool things to do are glacier hikes (at Fox Glacier or Franz Josef Glacier) and canoeing at Abel Tasman National Park on the South Island. And on the North Island there's stuff like downhill luging and sprint car racing at Rotorua which were pretty good.
If you're going to do whitewater, do the rafting at rotorua, but also do whitewater sledging somewhere - either from rotorua or from queenstown/wanaka. They give you a plastic boogie-board type thing and you manouvre it yourself down the rapids. It's excellent!
Also - sorry - there's this thing at Queenstown called 'parabungy' where you bungy jump off a parasailing boat on lake wakatipu (about 150m up, higher than the Nevis Highwire). Looks terrifying. I didn't do it, looks scary tho, those who did it thought it was good.
if your keen to go rafting emmets right the kaituna is a good one to go for but in all honesty the biggest and best commercial trips in nz are the rangiteiki near taihape in the north island and the rangatata in sth canterbury,
these sections are legitimate class 5 runs not over inflated rafting talk ive paddled them and been punished on a few occasions.
skiing wise the club fields are a good way to go get away from the masses and they have sick teriein but dont expect cafes and quad lifts more like rope tows(nut crackers)and sandwiches in the true kiwi styles.try porter heights, temple basin, and a few of those ones we often got 60+ days in on a 400 dollar season pass,
the best things in aotearoa(nz)are free you just have to walk climb or paddle for them,
get amoung it
