Lived in: China (5 years), South Korea (2 years)

Visited: North Korea, Malaysia (2x), Singapore, Russia (Siberia), Hong Kong and Macao, China

Future plans: I want to spend a summer drifting through the islands of Indonesia, from Sumatra to New Guinea. I also want to spend a month or two travelling by train around India.

Haven't read all the replies but my guess is Thailand is the most visited, followed by the old favourites Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

my list of asian places:

Turkey
Thailand
Qatar
Philippines
Hong Kong

I have now read all the replies and although Thailand is a winner i was suprised that cam laos viet werent mentioned as often as i thought. Although i still believe they would be the most visited if a proper list was compiled esp for the last few years.

I got this data from a document in the Philippine Congress that had a study on tourist arrivals in South East Asia...check the link on page 8... it was sourced from the ASEAN Secretariat and the World Tourism Organization.. so it ranked based on the tourism share of the world (in number of arrivals) in 2006...

1. Malaysia
2. Thailand
3. Singapore
4. Indonesia
5. Vietnam
6. Philippines
7. Cambodia

That is quite a surprising list, I would have definately put Thailand 1st, and the Philippines more visited than Cambodia?? That is a big surprise. I guess that because I never go to Manila or Borocay in the Philippines that I don't see too many western tourists, although I know that a lot of Koreans visit Philippines. I know that Malaysia is doing a massive tourism push ("Malaysia, Simply Asia" is on the TV in SE Asia all the time at the moment) and I suppose when I think of tourists I think of the backpacking westerner mainly found in Thailand, as it is easy to forget that a big chunk of travellers are not backpackers or western at all, it just bloody seems that way!!!!
