Hi there,

Could anyone tell me how easy it is to get Western medicine on the road in China - or, to be more precise, to get medicaiton for asthma. I'll be travelling independently in China for two months - Bejing, Shanghai, Hong Kong and then on to the more south-westerly provinces (including Tibet) - and am concerned that with the changes in temperature, altitude and pollution etc I might find myself in need of increasing my medicine supplies. Would I need to bring a prescription from my doctors with me, and do you think it will be necessary to have this translated into Mandarin and Cantonese ?

Thanks for any help you can give,
Simon

Hi Simon,
I'm sure you'll get medicine in the big cities, but having translations will be wise anyway. Make sure you know the actual drug names rather than their brand names.

Outside major cities, don't expect much.

On a positive note, our 12 year old asthmatic son had no problems for a week in smog-bound Beijing.

Cheers for the advice steveieh...good point about the generic as opposed to the brand name !

Thanks,
Simon
