Hi Kane
6 months in Sydney, that is a long time to be in one city. but I suppose if you like the city you may aswell. What jobs you going to be looking for there?

Ye Ultimate Oz does look good, but im still debating whether i should just do it myself and save the money, but like you said its a good opportunity to make friends! ye im thinking that, i havent been far on my own before, but get chucked in the deep end is probably the best bet, theres nothing holding me here so i think now is the best opportunity for me to do so.

Hi Aled,
Yeh six months is a long time, but it will allow me to make money so I can travel in the last 6 months hopefully. Job wise ill be looking at most things, I'm working in insurance at the moment but have been a bar/restaurant supervisor before that so we will just see what comes along.. Anything that brings in the money.

Ultimate Oz I'm more than likely going to do it! Hopefully I will have enough money to take with me!

FWIW, as someone who did it all himself in the time before ultimate oz and ozintro got started, I can thoroughly recommend just doing it yourself. Australia as a country is completely geared toward backpackers; it has perfect infrastructure, and it's a total breeze to open a bank account on your own, or to get a tax file number, or to do any of these other things which you'd pay far too much money for on one of these packages. Hostels are also overflowing with other backpackers who've just arrived, so to make friends you can just look around in the lounge of your hostel.

Kane

Yeah can see you theory, probably a good idea, to do all the work first then you can relax and enjoy, ill prob be travelling as i work, might change when i get there though.

Cheers for the advice, after you saying that im strongly considering doing it myself and save the bucks. What i don't want happening is being moved into a dorm where people have been staying together for a while so have bonded before i got there, thats why i was thinking ozintro or ultimate oz to start off on a level playing field.
Do you reccommend a hostel whee you can meet people easily. I dont want to a big a hostel such as wake up, as people say its very hard to meet people in large hostels.

any tips appreciated!

Hey Gooner_Ali

I'm Jo....looking to go to sydney end of this beginning of next. I've not travelled before but a friend of mine said those companies are a waste of money and all the info you need to know is available online.

Obv going with a co they will sort a hostel and get u together with others but you can prob meet others yourself.

Are u looking for anyone to go with? x

Hi Jo

Ye theres a mixed reaction for the companies, some say its brilliant and others say its a waste of money. I'm in the middle at the moment. i.e. dont really want to spend that much money but do fancy the activities they do, and its less of a hassle than for me to book it all myself.

I will be going on my own, and havent realy though of a travel buddy as of yet, want to sort everything out 1st such as visa, flights etc

Whats your plans when u get there? you going to work in Sydney?

Im Aled btw

Hey Aled,
I'm going to Sydney in August and I was just reading your thread.
What did you do in the end? And do you have any tips?
I'm going on my own too and I'm very scared; about being on my own and not meeting people and all the silly bits.
So any help would be so helpful.

Emily x

Hi Emily,

Only recently got back on this site, as I'm thinking of heading back for my 2nd year visa in September, so you caught me at a good time...ha

Well, I ended up doing everything on my own in the end, went straight in the deep end as they say. It was probably the best decision I made. I was bricking it don't get me wrong, but soon as I got the hostel, everyone was welcoming from the staff to the other travellers. It was easy to make friends, and that's coming from me quite a shy person, but it pushed me to be more extrovert. Load of people had travelled on their own, and we were all in a similar position, so everyone was friendly..cool atmosphere. So embrace being scared..(shows your normal), you'll make friends no problem (unless your a raving psycopath ) ..just be aware that your going to repeat the same lines over and over to begin with (i.e. your name, where your from, and your plans) but there always great convo starters.

Tips....well personally I found the smaller hostels better to meet people, as you get to see more of the same people, get to know them better, than seeing different people every day... that's just me though, depends what your preference is.

Oh I wouldt bother with UltimateOz either, you can do all the activities and stuff they offer much cheaper by yourself.

Anyway think I'm rambling too much here, If you need any more advice or tips, give me a shout (or message...) and I'll try my best to help
