Getting to San Diego from LAX

Travel Forums North America Getting to San Diego from LAX

I am flying into LAX on feb 12 at around 5pm with a buddy and we need to get to San Diego. We then have to return on the 19th. I've looked into it and the greyhound bus seems to be the cheapest. The only problem is I'm not sure how easy it is to get to the bus depot from the airport. Could somebody help me out? is there shuttles that go there or would a taxi be the only way? What about public transit? Or would somebody suggest some other way? I'm really just looking for the cheapest way (I know the train is a beautiful ride, but its more than twice as much as the bus).

Hi moutallica,

I did the journey the other way around about 7 years ago - from the Greyhound station in LA to LAX - the taxi cost about $25-$30 so it would probably be a bit more expensive than that now. It took about 20-25 minutes but that was at about 5am, so at 5pm i'm sure it'll take much longer (and therefore might be more expensive on the old taxi meter). I dont think they did a shuttle bus at the time. I'm sure you could do it by public buses, but it would be complicated and take a long time.

One more thing i'd say is that the LA Greyhound station is a DUMP, and is in a pretty undesirable area ! If it hasn't cleaned itself up a bit in the past 7 years then be prepared for some very sketchy characters and an intimidating atmosphere. There were people lying in the gutters outside the depot, and gangs of youths had congregated along the road outside the car park - so all I'd say is to make sure the taxi driver drops you inside the depot and not down the road or even just outside the compound.

Let me know if you've any other questions...happy holidaying..

I think the "Blue Line" system is finally complete and you can take it from the airport to downtown where the Greyhound bus terminal is (don't live in LA, though, so I'm not positive about this).

I agree that the bus terminal sucks, though.

Really, the cheapest way though is probably flying--not bus or train.
Southwest Airlines regularly runs advance sales specials allowing you to travel up and down the state of California for $39 each way (even from San Diego or Los Angeles all the way up to Oakland--where you could connect on the BART system into San Francisco). I can't imagine that the $78 round trip by plane to San Diego from LA is too much more than the bus--and it's definitely a whole lot more convenient and safe. Just sign up for Southwest's "rapid rewards notices" and book when the rate falls to $39.

You can also check out the other airlines' fees via a consolidator's website like mobilissimo or kayak.

Is renting a car not an option??? I live in the OC, and LA and San Diego are not easy to get around if you don't have a car. Hot Wire always has good deals. You can probably get the cheapest car available for about the same price as a Grey Hound ticket. The public transportation stinks in California! Yeah, and the Grey Hound bus idea is, well, rather scary! I do agree with the flying idea through Southwest. They will have the cheapest airfares. And then you would not have to deal with the freeways. LA drivers are not the nicest! But, I would definately rather take my chances renting a car rather than the bus idea. At least then you can do some sight-seeing. There are some beautiful things to see!
