Hi travel-lovers,

My husband suggested going to Rio for vacation next year. I am a little concerned about safety though. Does anyone have experience?
Where would I find information about safe areas?

Thanks a lot!

These days, it is just opinion to claim anywhere is safe. However Rio is a large city with millions going about their daily business without problems.

I had a number of days in Rio and had no problems. However I understand that nearby Sao Paulo is not safe, or at least, far less safe.

Rio has 11 big beaches which are empty all week (the sun is rather strong there for sunbathing) and the Jesus statue but not really a lot else.

Have you been to Peru? Lots there to see and do.

"Is it safe?" is like asking, "how long is a ball of string?" Everyone's opinion will be different depending on their travel experience.

Rio is a huge, complicated city where (as Cyberia points out) millions of people go about their daily lives with no problems. That's said, you MUST have your wits about you and use common sense and the usual street smarts and there are of course many areas of the city where a foreigner has absolutely no business ever venturing.

In other words, Rio is the very same as almost any big city. In terms of safety it's not unique in any way.

Depends what you mean by safe - it's all relative. Statistically, Rio IS more dangerous than the average big city but, as the other posters have said, the fraction of people that are victims of crime there is still minuscule. I wouldn't let safety concerns put you off visiting.
