Sometime we are just OVER ANALYZING... We want to explorers and not just another shirtless white guy with a beer in one hand and lady boy in another (oops I forget, I'm not white).
We like to see the Thai, the Vietnamese, the Lao people and the other Orientals as different, exotic and creatures to be understood, and so we have to come up with an ANAYSIS, of their behavior, so we can feel like we did something more than just coming to Asia like some teenage German nerds with Daddy's credit cards.
People can be rude or friendly anywhere... While cultural diversity is a reality, people in touristic places have learned to adopt to a common culture, that of Humanity.
By friendly, to we mean KISS ASSERS? Western fixated naive Asians, who love taking photos with white foreigners... Then congratulations to Thailand, if they have learned to be less friendly.
Sometimes, people didn't change, we did... Perhaps, one goes to Thailand in his 20's and he was HOT, and so the Asian like hot stuff, who doesn't? 15 years, you came back and people weren't as friendly....Blame it on mass tourism or do some sit ups.
>11 I love that last sentence. So true!
When I read the thread title, I thought you were talking about Russia. Most unfriendly country I've ever been to! They are unbelievably hostile to strangers. If you think you've met some unfriendly people in Bangkok, you ought to go to Moscow!
Of course, once you start drinking with them, it's a whole other story...
When I was in Tokyo, my friends (same race and country) told our Japanese friends that they think the Japanese are not friendly and all the stereotypes of people living in a busy urban environment. At least 9 other people made the same statement... But I had a totally different observation, I thought the Japanese were very friendly, helpful, hospitable, loves foreigners, and again loves foreigners.
I was not surprised. I'm cute! And if I'm cute in Asia, I should be a celebrity in Russia.
Swept Away, the Japanese are indeed incredibly polite to your face, but don't be fooled - if you understood the language you'd be appalled at what many of them would say about the gaijin as soon as you turned your back.
That said, cute works everywhere. Milk it while you can!
I'm revisiting a country, which for me, has the least friendly and extremely annoying people. I loved to hate them. But then I remember two very honest people, I met on the street, and it is the only country in Southeast Asia, where I manage to get a job offer, reserved for caucasians. Indeed cute works.
So I wanna like them. I think hating them only means that I know too little about that country, so I vow to return.
People, like me, who are extremely attractive, should mention that when posting so that readers know that they might not have the same experience.
ps I'm hot.
