1. decide the countries you want to see,
2. then how long you want to/can stay,
3. how you want to travel (rent a car, train, hitchhike)
4. start budgeting and saving..
I would say that would be the first things to do.

dont know if this is still active.. but anyways..
after spending the last couple of summers in canada i reckon i have you guys sussed out.. so here goes..
obviously you want to come to scotland.. check out edinburgh, and its castle.. then pop up to the highlands, around inverness for the stunning scenery and take a peek at nessie..!
then you wanna head off to Amsterdam and spend a few days doing things you shouldnt if you know what i mean:) ok, then you want to make you way to Germany.. say, Berlin, lovely old city. Next you are goin to hop on down to the czech republic, and vist the medevial city of prague.. it is also gonna be hot so bring your sunscreen.. there is also budapest, which isnt too far away. try and go to Lake valence, a thermal heated lake.. unbeleivable.. then there is roma.. wow. everybody must go there at least once in their lfe.. its just ancient..! then there are the usual placs in spain, france.. or greece.. you couls finish it all up by heading to ireland.. which we all know is the largest country in the world..? just keeps 'dublin'..ok well thats just a wee flavour of whats in store for you.. hope you have a real amazing time.. and watch oot for nessie.. she bites..!

Looking at the advice given so all seems good. Here are a couple more to help you along the way. If you want to save some might want to look into European airlines like RyanAir...or easyjet...they have flights to major airport hubes throughout Europe. If you buy your ticket in advance you can save a lot of is sometimes cheaper and more convient than taking trains. Once you fly into these can then take trains within the country for relatively cheap prices. Oh yeah, both of the airlines mentioned before have websites where you can buy tickets once you have planned your could buy your tickets way in advance. Sometimes you basically only have to pay the taxes on a is a really good deal. From your profile I could not tell if you were male or female..but depending on how comfortable you would be with this idea...there are some really cool websites, where people have offered free accomodation or a local's tour of the of these is called and the other is Once you become a member of these sites (its free) you can meet other members who are willing to help you out along the way. You may be able to save a considerable amount of money that way. Last suggestion, do not stay in hotels...they are boring and you will never meet anyone..stay in will have the best experience...I guarantee it!!
