South Korea is a good first stop in Asia: it's safe, with good transportation, and lots of people speak English.

If you have time, I'd recommend going to Jeju Island. There are some nice beaches there, and Hallasan (Mount Halla), the huge extinct volcano in the center, is worth seeing. You can fly to Jeju Island, or take the overnight ferry from Busan (which is what I'd recommend).

Suwon, near Seoul, is also worth visiting. It is an historic city, which still has it's city wall. The fortress there is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Don't forget to try Korean barbeque, while you are there. You cook it yourself at your table, or the ajumma (waitress) cooks it for you. It's especially nice in the summer, when you can eat outdoors. (Korean beer is awful though. Get imported beer, if you can.)

There is loads to see in Seoul, and the underground train system is supurb so it's quick and easy to get around the city. Don't miss the excellent War Memorial Museum. Seoul is a really safe city - I was travelling alone and never felt unsafe, even walking around alone at night.

I'd also recommend taking a tour up to the DMZ on the border with North Korea. I took a tour with the USO which was really good.
