We will be travelling from Split to Ljubljana and can allow an overnight stop on the way. I have a two pronged question:
1. If we hire a car and go from Split to Plitvice Lakes (very keep to see this National Park!) which city should we go via - Rijeka, Zadar or Zagreb? Which of these cities will have the easiest transition onto Ljubljana (not by car though, maybe bus or train)?
2. Would it be possible to get from Split, via Plitvice, to Ljubljana in one day (leaving very early, arriving very late)? I think it is unrealistic but the distances don't look too far?
Any advice would be appreciated. This is the only part of our trip that I have found it difficult to gather information!!
I am from Zagreb.
Of course its possible to do it in one day but it depends on how long you are planning to stay in Plitvice. Split is connected with Ljubljana (via Zagreb) all the way with highway for which you have to pay. In Croatia you pay on tollbooth (around 200 kn) and for Slovenia you need to buy a sticker at the border (15€). From Zagreb to Ljubljana is 1.45 h and from Split to Zagreb is around 3.30 hours. You can drive 140 km/h easily on the highway.
This is by using car.
Thanks! I have looked online at car hire prices and it seems very expensive, just as a point of interest I changed the nationality to 'Croatian' on the search and the price dropped by 50%. Is there a good company for cheap car hire. We will probably only hire for 2 days, taking the car in Split and returning it to Zagreb.
