Hi, my names Laura and im an 18 year old female from near Heathrow. Have decided to go travelling and make the most of it whilst I'm still young!

Starting off in Sydney and hoping to make friends and travel round Australia and then maybe Thailand.

Haven't booked flights yet, but am going at the end of July.

Have been to Ghana on my own for 4 weeks before, but have never travelled for longer than that, so yeah I'm a little nervous.

If anyone else was thinking of going around the end of July and wanted to meet up, or just talk, i'd love to hear from you. Any advice on what to do, where to start, anything, would be looovely too!

Thanks, Laura

I've just got back from 18 months travelling, which included six months working in Sydney. Although I didn't do it, I think there are things like Oz Intro and obviously the Oz Experience where you will meet people. Also you'll meet tons of people at any hostel you decide to stay in, Wake Up and Base are particularly popular in the centre of Sydney.

Not sure how long you have, but you mention Thailand, and I would say definitely go to Thailand if you have the chance (and Indonesia, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia are all worth a visit too!) and New Zealand as well. I found those countries to be much more rewarding that Australia. Be warned Australia is VERY expensive!

Anyway I can't be much help, other than to try and put your mind at ease and say you are about to embark upon the best time of your life and you will have no trouble meeting people!

Thanks for writing!
I'm going travelling for 1-2 years... Hoping to visit lots of places. I have decided not to book through a company as I find them very expensive. Would prefer to book it all separately really. You sound like you've had an amazing time. What was your job in Sydney? I'm thinking of going to Manly beach and doing some
Bar work, any other towns you would recommend in sydney?
:)

I think you are best off booking it all separately. I booked a round the world ticket, which was valid for 12 months, and as I stayed longer than 12 months, I ended up having to pay for flights, etc, for my last six months. Doing it your way gives you more flexibility and Air Asia do really cheap flights in and out of London. I think it cost me about £350 to get back from Malaysia to London!

I worked for Amnesty International writing and editing stuff for their website. I think there are plenty of jobs in Australia, and certainly around Sydney I wouldn't think you would have too much trouble. I met a couple of other people travelling who ended up back in Sydney and got work straight away.

I lived in Neutral Bay in Sydney which is the first stop over the Harbour Bridge, which is really nice, and then Ashfield which is nice too. Manly is awesome - easily my favourite part of Sydney, try and get a job in the Manly Wharf Hotel! Other areas I liked are Glebe and Newtown and Coogee is nice too.

If you have any questions, etc, give me a shout!

Hi, I have some questions.. Did you set up an Australian bank account? Any info on that? And medical care, does the NHS cover us out there, I heard it does?
Thanks for your help
