I struggle to be at home for more than a day now, and where possible, actively avoid it. That's not to sound like i'm a heartless kid (i am, but that's besidfe the point) or don't love/appreciate my parents, but I think Tway summed it up more or less perfectly:

but mothers will be mothers

And that's before you get into fathers and siblings.

I'm just used to being myself, having my independance and not knowing whats going on or whats going to happen - life needs to be made up as you go along, more or less

And David, go for it. Your probably both brave, stupid and adventurous amongst many other things, but you certainly won't regret it. Have a fantastic time, and enjoy your freedom and doing something different

Thanks all, only 11 more weeks to go. It feels like I'm on a NASA countdown. All systems are go but I can't yet press the start button.

Everyone I know thinks I'm either brave or very stupid. I like to think adventeurous as it should be one hell of an adventure.

Enjoy the adventure!!!!!!! You'll find you aren't the only 40-something out there traveling the same way. Returned recently from Panama where we met several people in their mid-to-late 50's who had decided it was time for a change. My husband and I are in the planning stages of a new adventure and working on closing some old doors. (I'm 51, he's 43.)

If you turn back now - you'll regret it later - and won't have any great stories to tell the friends/family back home. Psychological, not physical, age is the key. My mother used to say, "You're only as old as you feel". It may be an old cliche but it still works for me. I just turned 18 yesterday!

You're only as old as the woman / man that you feel

Unless the police catch you and the person you feel was under 16. But i digress.

Here in the US, it's 18 - but who's counting...
Sometimes you just feel (like) yourself.
