Hi All.

Hope that subject line caught your attention as I'm hoping for a fairly quick response (I want to book my RTW ticket this weekend if possible.) I'm just wondering whether people think it best to travel up the East Coast from Sydney to Cairns or vice versa. I'll be arriving in Australia in August if that makes a difference. Also I'll be on my own so will want to meet up with people enroute - is there a more popular direction in terms of what other travellers will be doing?

I want to be in Sydney for New Year but I'm happy to get an internal flight back to Sydney from Cairns if necessary.

I'd be really grateful for any advice and to hear from anyone doing something similar.

Whether travelling up or down, I can't see the difference. However, as your flight will land in Sydney, why don't you travel up from there, hang out in Cairns and other places, then travel back down for New Years in Sydney. That way you travel both ways.

Internal flights can be purchased at and

Have fun.

When I travelled down the East Coast I reckon it was about fifty fifty of people going up and down, so I don't think it really matters which way you do it.

If you're staying in hostels then you'll meet plenty people, but I would also totally recommend doing a 3 day trip to Fraser Island as this is an excellent way of meeting people (plus the fact that Fraser Island is excellent in any case). You get put into groups of 11 people (each with a truck) and then you drive around to all the cool spots on the island for a couple of days, so by the end of the trip you all know each other really well.

A Whitsundays tour is all worth doing, although I preferred Fraser Island.

I also liked Great Keppel Island and found the hostel I stayed at there had a communal atmosphere when I was there.

Surfers Paradise and Byron Bay also have a good nightlife, and getting drunk with people from your hostel is also an excellent way of meeting people.

Dont think it makes a difrence. People travel both ways mostly on a loop sydney- cairns- darwin- Ayers Rock- Adeliade- Melbourne- Sydney or the other way around.
