I'm going to Thailand in April. I've got a place teaching english on Ko Pha Ngan or Ko Tao from May to August, but I'm having second thoughts as to whether I wouldn't rather just get a flight out to Bangkok and do whatever I want. I would have a bit of independant travel time whatever I do but I'm worried I might feel tied down if I go for the placement, especially on the Islands where I might meet other travellers. My original plan was to volunteer first to find my feet, but I'm going later than I planned and won't have as much time post-placement as I would like. Taking the placement is also going to make a big hole in my funds. But then, I think maybe I'll get more of a unique, deeper experience teaching Thai kids and see more of real Thailand, even though it seems more scary and less fun.
I could also start out by joining a trip. I've looked into some Indochina loop ones that are lengthy.
Has anybody got any experience of volunteering, teaching and travelling alone/in a group in Thailand that might help me make the decision. Because I really need to!

and it's also the first time I've travelled to the area.

Koh Pha Ngan & Tao are fantastic islands. Could give you a chance to get know your way round before deciding what else to do
