Curacao or Aruba?

Travel Forums Central/South America & The Caribbean Curacao or Aruba?

Hello -

I am planning a 5 day vacation and have narrowed it down to Curacao or Aruba. I am interested in snorkeling, sunny beaches, a few nice dining experiences, fishing and scuba. I might be alone, so "romantic" spots are not a high priority. I don't have kids, so kid friendly places are a downer also.

I'd love to hear your experience with either location. . .

What did you love about it

What did you dislike

Opinion on single female (experienced traveler) going alone?

Thanks!!

Hi there,

don't know if you have already made a decision on whether to go to Aruba or Curacao, but my boyfriend and I just got back from a two week holiday on Aruba and to answer your questions:

What did you love about it

  • Everything! Weather was great, people are super friendly, diving/snorkeling is excellent, local food is yummy, it is very safe and prices are reasonable. So highly recommend!

What did you dislike

  • Nothing at all!

Opinion on single female (experienced traveler) going alone?

  • You should have no problems what so everl! Met single female travellers who seemed to have lots of fun!

All of this said, we have not been to Curacao, but from our experience now, Aruba is definitely a great choice!

Steff

Aruba you will find a lot of high rise hotels, very Americanized and touristy, but beautiful beaches. When I think of Aruba, Cancun spring break comes to mind. This may be what you are looking for.

Curacao - haven't been there but met someone who did a lot of cruises and said they were impressed the most with Curacao in terms of the caribbean and beauty.

One other suggestion I have is Bonaire. Bonaire doesn't have a lot in terms of beaches, but it does have excellent snorkeling and supurb diving. Part of the ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao), but much more laid back than the aforementioned, and less populated. There are no-all inclusives on Bonaire. Known as a popular dive destination, but it does offer nightly entertainment in town, though you will not find a Senior Frogs here. It has an arid tropical climate.

If I personally had to choose between the three as a woman traveling solo, I'd choose Bonaire for diving and safety, but that's just my opinion and I'm also biased as a certified scuba diver.

If you travel alone, stay smart, be aware of your surroundings, and be careful who is serving you drinks.

Aruba is more American touristy party, curacao is more local flavor, with mostly Europeans, (Dutch, but still most speak English) somewhat touristy but not really, Bonaire is tiny and sleepy, if you are diving or want a quiet trip then good choice, otherwise you might be bored,
