Oakland can be a great town, but it also has some really bad areas with high unemployment and violent crime. Do your research before you settle there...

I would suggest looking in Berkeley - just north of Oakland. Both cities are on the BART (light rail) line.

Oakland is a very unusual town. It has run down, unsafe areas on the south side and on the area right near the bay bridge it is highly commercial. But if you go to the area on the north side or on the east side up in the hills, it is a very upscale area--and highly sought after.

If you want to find a place, check out Craigslist or the SF Examiner newspaper (online edition)--but I wouldn't recommend booking any place in Oakland unless you are already familiar with the town--or have a friend/realtor who already lives there and can help you in your search. You would do better to either book in Berkeley or else in Emeryville or Lafayette (other nearby cities that are also fairly upscale). I would suggest Lafayette or Emeryville over Berkeley only because Berkeley is very costly due to its proximity to the University of California's main campus.

Good luck
