I've just been on the British Foreign Office website and it says there's a high risk of terrorism throughout Thailand. My boyfriend and I are planning on making some stops in SE Asia on the way to Oz (in 3 weeks) and wanted to stop in Thailand but are now worried. Are we being overly cautious? Everyone else seems to be going!
The only indirect terrorism in Thailand are in the southern most three provinces of Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani. This terrorism is against the government and not diected towards tourists. Phattalung and Hat Yai are regarded as minor threats since they have occasional terrosist activities to government officials and farmers. I wouldn't define it as terrorism... more like anarchy. Every other place is fine (Bangkok, Samui, Phuket, Pattaya, Hua Hin, Chiang Mai, etc). As the Thai's say: no worries.
The Biritsh Foreign Office is being overly cautious
Thanks guys - I was being overly cautious just as my poor boyfriend suspected!
Nothing wrong with being cautious - just keep an eye on the newspapers and try to stay informed - Thailand has two English daily newspapers that have nationwide circulation, so its not difficult to remain informed.
As other posters have said, the problems are in the far south, not really huge tourist areas, but that may change in the future.
I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but I would keep my eyes and ears open!
Let me give you all a hint. We never had this kind of irritating problem during the previous time when another political party was the government. Just when another party got its turn to work and the useless people got kicked out, these things started to happen. It is quite obvious that all of these terrorism have nothing to do with religions in this country. It's just "POLITICS."
Above all, FYI, during the entire time of almost 2-3 years that this silly thing happened in a few provinces down south, the evil people never aimed at tourists/travelers. The main targets of the "brainwashed" people are officials in uniforms. You just have to make sure that you stay away from those officials and their workplace. Also avoid gathering in the crowd to see any incidents.
