I am planning on attending a TEFL Course in Costa Rica in October and am trying to decide between the area of Quepos and Montezuma. I am single, 42 and female. I do not speak much spanish but will begin working on that! I have traveled many places in Europe alone comfortably. But have heard Costa Rica is not as easy for a female traveler.
Any insight it to either town would be much appreciated.
I'm sorry, but it has been a long time that I was there. I stayed a few days in Montezuma, which I liked, but I didn't stay in Quepos. At the time I was around 23 and travelling with friends.
So I'm not the best person to give you an advice.
Good luck with your decision!
Montezuma is a very nice place to stay and so is Quepos; personally I prefer Montezuma.
You can travel alone here, but as usual you should keep the same safety measures that you will follow at your own country.
I will recommend you to talk with the person at the hotel and get info regarding with areas should be avoid, etc.
Beside that, considering the location of both cities; you can easily go from one city to the other using public transportation.
If you need more info, just let me know.
Both places have their charm, although Montezuma is probably a bit more intimate than Quepos. The latter is near to Manuel Antonio Park, which perhaps is over-visited by now.
In any case, watch the following video, act accordingly and you'll be fine.
Enjoy your stay!

after living in Costa Rica 20 years ,I have seen certain places deteriate as well as the once lovely Caribbean Coast (6 years ago I sent Many of my B&B guests there ,Now due to the influx of heavy drugs !
Now unfortunately Montazuma and Quepos is getting the same crowds !
IF you are into heavy parties then go there IF not avoid Both and stick to the gorgeous central Valley or if you MUST be near the beach then try Pacific coast Manuel Antonio is safer and nice
