It is said that 1 in 9 people in America live in California so it is rather built up, even outside of the big cities. Possibly you could stop in the car park of a large mall overnight or in a parking area on a local road somewhere but you may get a visit from the local police, checking why you are there. You may also get a visit from someone, if secluded, wanting to rob you (with a gun).

It is generally best to pay and go on a good site.

Nea,
Almost all Wal-Marts allow overnight parking. Ask when you are shopping. Most medium to large motels have an oversize parking area behind their motel. Guests park their: RVs, boats, big trucks when staying at the motel. It is illegal, but I have slept in this area many times. Most motels do not have security. Arrive late, right to bed. Up with the sun and out. You can park overnight at the many rest areas on our Interstate highways. The signs do say 'No Overnight Parking', but I checked with several rest area managers and they will not make you get up and move. I don't recommend rest areas because of noise levels and safety concerns. If you choose this option, arrive late and look for the big rigs. They lay up all the time at rest areas. Another option is boat launching areas. Boaters leave their car/truck/RV here while out on the water. This is a good option. Quiet, safe, has toilets. National and State Forests are an option as well. Their fees are lower than the parks and you may find an area that you can overnight w/o causing anyone to notice.

Good luck with your US adventure.
