Im looking at going travelling to Asia and am in need of some advice.
I want to do something abit different like yoga/ tia chi/ martial arts/ reiki/ meditation whilst staying in the mountains/ somewhere peacefull and quiet so i can get some general relaxation and heal my body as well as learn some new skills.
Question is, is there anywhere anyone knows of that I can do this where I am not going to be putting myself at a considerable amount of risk (i.e risk outweighing the benifit) as i will be travelling alone and am a white western female.
Does such a place even exist? or do I need to go to places as Goa ect to do things like yoga and be relitively safe as there seems to be alot of tourists there, ( yes, this doesn't mean definate saftey and anyhting can happen anywhere in this day and age)
I've been looking inot Goa and it seems that it's abit of a toursit trap with abit of a drinking culture. Nothing wrong with that, just I did that in my early twenties and want a different expereince this time.
Any advice/expereinces/suggestions welcome,
Thnakyou = )
Being a solo female traveller in Asia is quite safe. I would not worry too much about it. Just use your common sense. Violent crime in Asia is really low, so you should be ok.
[ Edit: Sorry, no promos please. ]
Welcome to Myanmar. Here really safe and enjoy. a lot of beach site city on the south. You can get more enjoyable and more wonderful time here. Many thing to do for tours a round and get excellent rates what you want to get. The door is starting open here. So every foreign investment welcome to set up here. so don't be sorry just come and visit, find out whatever. The best chance never come twice.
You r so brave travelling alone.
Try Japan or India.
thanks guys, thats a relief! Where in Asia did you go Jade?
Myanmar sounds like my kind of thing, I shall look into that.
Any other places to go that are slightly off the beaten track and still relatively safe?Im thinking India mostly but also Thialand and indonesia.
I'm looking at afew yoga schools in India the one I really like is at Parmarth Niketan (sorry not trying to promote here just starting from total scratch with this) wich is near Dheli so I would have to get a bus from Dheli to there which takes half an hour. any thoughts?
Also, does anyone know if it is possible to volunteer at an ashram? = )
I read your post and let me suggest my country to you especially Esfahan that has a so calm hill called sofeh on the top that is safe and accessible for those who like meditate for a while. and have a look to some descriptions of Iran that I have copied from my profile in CS;
I have to mention that Iran is a four-season country . and this is so great !! You can Ski in north of Iran and with an aeroplane in just less that a hour You will be in a very great Desert and having safari tours and camel rides !!! isnt that interesting ??
Each city of Iran has its own beauties but make Sure You visit these cities :
1 - Tehran :
The capital city . good restaurants . good parks . very good theme parks for Your childrens . and so many other stuff .
2 - Esfahan : one of Iran`s and even world`s top cities . so beautifull . full of histircall sites that rarely gather in one city anywhere else in the world . You MUST MUST visit this town .
3 - Shiraz : again another historical and beautifull city of iran . has Great Takhte jamshid historical site in it .
othere than these sites if You are a beach lover try 2 or 3 days at our southern city ; Kish Island . this is a great Island south of Iran in Persian Gulf with beautifull beaches and great hotels and great malls .
and the last Region that check if You have time ( which is also so beautiful ) is northern Iran which locals call : " Shomal " . try to go there by a hired car , it is a 4 hours drive . choose Chaloos Road to get there as it is a fantastic road , sorrounded by mountains and when you pass these mountains You will pass between Fogs and green trees . A dream way . You wont regret Your trip there .
3 - about tour reservation , If you are coming between 20 March to 5 April, You should certainly reserve Your hotels , cars , planes and ... prior arrving . because it is Iran`s Official yearly holiday ( New Year ) called Norowz . it is so crowded as people travel a lot but after that period of time , You will have no problem as it is less crowded .
4 - Dress code is Iran is a little different from Uk , You can wear everything which is long enough that covers Your body and You should bring a scarf or a hat with yourself to cover your hair . Islamic rules . but as You are not iranian dont worry no body will take it hard on You . You will have no problems . Iranians are famous for their Hospitality .
5 - it is ABSOLOUTLY safe in IRAN . Iran is one the safest countries in middle east and You should only consider little tips like all over the world . You can go outside till after midnight and You will feel completely safe !
If You have other questions just ask , ill be glad to help You have a great Stay in IRAN .
P.S : How long do You want to stay in Iran ?? make it at least 2 weeks . You need that time
please feel free to contact me.

Im reading the book and thats where i got the ashram idea, thankyou, I will rent the film and have a look at that. I think it's out on DVD = )
