Round the world ticket or single flights??

Hi folks,

I would really appreciate some advice if possible.

I am planning a round the world trip which I am hoping to start in mid October 2011. This has yet be be confirmed, I may get to leave a couple of weeks or so earlier or a couple of weeks later. This has obviously caused difficulties as it makes it pretty difficult to arrange flights. Even companies who offer free date changes have said that this would not apply to my first outgoing flight.

My route involves Glasgow - London - Bangkok - Sydney(overland to Cairns) - Auckland - Santiago(overland to Buenos Aires)- London - Glasgow. I have been quoted between £1800 and £2200 from 2 different companies. What do you guys think? Does this seem a fair price?

I am wondering if you think it may be better to just get singular flights as I go rather than a round the world ticket. I am sure this would provide a bit more flexibility incase my plans change whilst I am travelling, but I am not sure if this method would in the long run prove more expensive. Does anyone know any good websites if booking individual flights between these places?

Thanks so much, please get in touch if you can help!

Martin.

Hey

Having a little doss at work and came across this. It's getting me all excited so had to respond!

Personally I would suggest doing it yourself as plans may change but hey if you have the cash and feel safer only your gut will now best! I checked STA Travel and they were coming in dear enough. In the end I did a lot of research online and the likes of Expedia, Skyscanner, netflights, Opodo, Ebookers etc were quite good with only a few pounds difference.

My route is Edinburgh - Gatwick - Beijing flying with BA & Emirates (make my own way down to Singapore) and depart from Singapore onto Perth with Tiger Airways. I've booked a one way as my trip would extend 12 months and didn't want to be tied to dates.

As an idea for you...(I know it's not the same route) I paid £470 for my Edi-Lgw-Bei flight and £115 for my Perth flight. As I say different route but gives you an idea.

Unfortunately I don't know of any site specialising flights to the individual places.

Good Luck!

Hi Cazzy,

Thanks for the info, sounds like you got realy good prices for those flights. Am I right in thinking you need an outbound flight from Asia already booked when you land in order to get in?

Ive just had round the world experts on the phone again tonigth giving me the hard sell and warning me that if I dont snap up these prices they are going to go up. It has kind of put me off a bit and I dont know what they expect me to do when I dont know an exact date that I can leave on yet.

I realise that taking in South America will push a round the world ticket up a bit but I didnt think itd be as much as I was quoted. And as you rightly pointed out...my plans may change!

No worries.

Thats the first I've heard re Asia, think of all the many travellers who do things last minute, surely there has to be an allowance for that. Consider asking more questions online, perhaps other websites as relying on an agents word is not always best although I know they have good knowledge too - not knocking them!

Ya I had that too - STA did put the pressure on with emails too. I mean how much higher can the prices go by you hanging on a few days and don't forget the agent you dealt with will rely on commission. Hopefully other more experienced peeps will pop on this to give advice. Don't book something when your not sure just because your agent is pushing the sale.

Yeah I kinda like the freedom and uncertainty that just booking my first flight would bring. I mean I think its quite likely the people that I meet may determine the type of route I eventually take. I think its just as much about the people as the places.
