I am moving to India on the 8th August for a year and possibly longer depending as to how everything works out.
I'm moving to Ooty in Tamil Nadu state and I'm keen to try and learn as much Tamil as I can. Can anyone recommend a good resource for learning the language so I have a basic level in order to speak to locals while out there?
What are the best places to visit in southern India within day or weekend trips of Ooty?
I may or may not be going back home to the UK for Christmas, probably not because I can't afford it. I was wondering where would be good to visit for a trip over Christmas? I had the idea of visiting Goa for Christmas but that's just an idea...
This is my first trip to Asia and certainly rather nervous!
Any advice is most welcomed!
If this is your first time outside of Europe, than just get prepared for a very shocking environment that will welcome you in India. But don't let yourself discouraged by it but try to get immersed in India's very vibrant and interesting life.
Good news is that Tamil Nadu and Kerala are probably the some of the most relaxed, cleanest and developed areas of the sub-continent. People in the south are also amazing! And I heard Ooty is a nice place.
Kerala and Tamil Naide are real gems, it's rainforest, tea-fields and hill-stations will offer plenty of opportunities to do short term trips in the area.
In Kerala, you will find the amazing backwaters and some of India's best beaches (e.g. Varkala) that overshade the otherwise terrible Goa.
Beside the joint nature with Kerala, TN has a lot of culture, history and temples to visit.
Should you want to head a bit north to Karnataka State, the historical site at Hampi and the Om Beach at the sacred Gokarna town are also magnificent.
I am sure you will enjoy India and you will meet some many people during your sta, and you will start giving advice on this forum in a few months.
The greatest adventure is ahead of you! Enjoy it!
Thank you for your reply!
Really looking forward to it, still struggling to get my visa but with a bit of luck will get it tomorrow!
I've been to Africa a couple of times but never Asia so apart from what I've been told and what I've read on the internet I'm not really entirely sure what to expect! Lots of travelling around Europe but nowhere else. I'm really looking forward to getting into the national parks and trekking in the Nilgiris. I'm pleased I've chosen south India!
I'll definitely be posting on this forum later on plugging places that I've been and enjoyed!
