A back pack is often just as heavy as what you are carrying in it. With a bigger one, there is a temptation to carry more as with a smaller one, you will leave behind things you don't really need and cut down on impulse buys while on holiday.

The thing about a backpack is it's not a matter of loading it up and walking around the garden for five minutes and thinking you can manage it. It's a matter of carrying it for hours and hours and walking uphill or over rough ground with it.

But having said that, I have seen people with back packs, carrying bags too, so it is a matter of how much you want to take with you and how much you will buy while away.

i think 75 sounds way too big. The length of your trip should actually encourage you to take less, because do you really wanna lug a huge heavy thing around with you for that long?
I also like to pack lots, but i went for a 40 L, and filled it to the brim, and actually i hardly use most of the clothes etc ive packed (im currently travelling for a year) and have got rid of some stuff. and any stuff you buy you can always send home in the post
When buying it, make sure you try it on and see how it feels on your back (they can fill it for you to try) and I found that one with lots of pockets and compartments is really handy.
Maybe a 40 wont suit you, but i would suggest you go as small as you can :)

75L is enormous! I took a 55L pack with me around Australia but I really struggled with it, so now I generally take my 40L Northface pack when I go travelling.

If you're a girly girl, I suggest you use big/huge shoulder bags that you could place all your things when you go anywhere.
