One place to avoid is the Hostelling International in New Orleans. I've heard it's a pretty sub-standard place. You definitely don't want to ruin the New Orleans experience with horrible accomodations! But you will have a BLAST!

Thanx for the tips guys, lots of people are now telling me that new orleans itself is a dodgy place to visit for crime. All the hostels i read about seem to be shitholes and the hotels and b+bs to expensive. Are there other places in louisiana that i should check out as we are there for 2 weeks. ty :)

just came back from new orleans. We stayed in a place called St Vincent Guesthouse (some places also call it st vincent's hostel). Its a decent place. We didnt stay in the dorm, but we had a room (double bed) to us. It costed me 40 bucks per head per day, which wasnt bad. As such NO is bad for crime, so I dont know how safe this area is but during mardi gras, I didnt feel a thing. Its not a great place as such, its fixtures are kinda shaky, but its got a character to it and its pretty basic (the way I like it).
