Travel advice for 6 weeks in south-east Asia

Travel Forums Asia Travel advice for 6 weeks in south-east Asia

Hello,

I just have a few questions regarding travelling in s.e. Asia.

Firstly, would 6 weeks be a long enough time to see Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam?

I would prefer to start in Thailand and see Bangkok, some islands, then up to the north (around 2 weeks)

Then I'd plan on a week in Cambodia, and finally 3 weeks in vietnam, going from Saigon upto Hanoi and Sapa, seeing everywhere in between.

Secondly, how much money would I need to take for hostels/transport/food?

I'd plan on doing things cheaply, but was thinking £2000 for 6 weeks?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Tom

Seems to me that if you intend on seeing Northern Vietnam, that would be the place to start the trip, and end it in Bangkok. Transport from Saigon and the VN Mekong Delta is very easy into Cambodia and then onto Thailand. I also think it's better to start in the less developed countries first - if you started in Thai first, you'd be a little spoiled by the time you go to Cambodia/VN. That's more than enough money, but I would plan on a little more time for 3 countries. Since you're in the area, why not see Laos too (just add 2 or 3 more weeks). The only place you need to prearrange a visa is Vietnam, and you can easily do that online for a Visa Approval Letter (airport arrival only).

Thanks Daawgon, that's great advice!

Starting in VN would make sense!

I only have 6 weeks due to work commitments, I can't go for longer unfortunately.

I really want to spend 3 weeks in Vietnam, looks like a fascinating country, and very diverse.

After that I would only have 3 weeks left, so do you think maybe see Laos and Cambodia and leave Thailand for another trip?

I'm sure they are fantastic places but I'm not as drawn to Laos and Cambodia as I am to Thailand and Vietnam.

Was even thinking of flying between Saigon and Bangkok.

I think I have a solution to my time constraints. Start in Hanoi and use it as my base for a week. From there go to Sapa and stay with locals. Then go to halong bay. Then make my way down through VN. Hoi an, Hue, Nha Trang etc. Then use HCMC as my base and see mekong delta, tunnels etc. That should take me 3 wks. Then bus to Phnom Penh, and from there upto Angor Wat. I was thinking a week in Cambodia, will that be enough time? Then onto Bangkok for a few days and then down to a few islands, undecided which one at the moment. I plan on 2 wks in Thailand, but I only plan on seeing Bangkok and the south. I don't thing I have the time to see northern Thailand which is a shame, but think I would rather see Sapa in northern Vietnam instead. Would this be possible to do on £1500 rather than my initial estimate of £2000? Not inc. Flights obviously! Haha. Any further advice would be great. Thanks. Tom
