my parents are in there 60's and are planning to make a trip for about 3 weeks in September/ October to the West Coast. We are based in Ireland so it will be a long haul flight for them but they have always wanted to do it! They want to take in San Fran and I was thinking they could maybe start there and drive up towards Seattle?
Any recommendations for a nice relaxing holiday where they would get to see a lot, for relatively reasonable money would be appreciated. (they will be hiring a car!)
thanks for any replies!
It depends on what they like to do really - San Fran itself is a very chilled out kind of city. There's a lot to see there - apart from the various diverse parts of the city itself there's Golden Gate Pk and Alcatraz (I highly recommend that!! esp. the nighttime tour). They could also take a trip out to Berkley outside the city to see the university, etc...
I was over there a few years ago and my friends and I hired a car and drove up to Yosemite National Pk (defintiely worth a visit!) on the way to Lake Tahoe. We took in some wine-tasting in the Napa Valley - if your folks are wine buffs then they'll enjoy that - very realxing way to kill an afternoon or two.
We didnt get anywhere near Seattle so i cant help you on that score! Although, Katherine Thomas reviewed it on No Frontiers (I see you're Irish!...) two weeks ago and it looks like a great city.
Anyway, hope that helps.
First of all look into the car hire costs. There are likely to be substantial drop off charges for picking up in San Francisco and dropping off in Seattle.
For that reason it is normally best to plan a circular route, although you may be able to pick up and drop off in the same state for no charge e.g. in your situation you could probably pick up in San Francisco and drop off in Los Angeles with no charge.
