Hello . . . .

Im going travelling January 2012 for 3 months. Half travelling the east coast of Australia and the other South East Asia. Im a first time traveller and travelling alone.

I was seeking help on just a couple of issues really:

  • How to travel the east coast of australia - greyhound or oz experience
  • What kind of budget you need for a 3 month trip

Any input on the above would be great!!!

Also anyone travelling at the same time / places, please get in touch, would be great to chat.

Cheers

Tom

i am in the same situation, i am a first time traveller going to aus first in January / December, then nz and onto south east asia.
I want to do the east coast for a few weeks starting in Sydney, then from Cairns to NZ. i also need to find out what kind of Visas i need for the trip to aus but i think they're simple to sort out.

Hi alex

Yeah i think the visa for oz is pretty easy to get, around £20 if i remember right. Not sure about asia yet.

Where you heading in oz then?? I leave on the 17th Jan, flying into melbourne and travelling upto cairns . . .

i'm intending to leave either beginning of december or late jan. haven't decided yet with work and all that!
i'm doing the same thing, might go to melbourne but my original plan was to go sydney to cairns then fly to NZ. will probable see you up the coast somewhere!

Hey Tom,

If you're travelling alone you might want to look at a tour like this -snip- if you're short and time and want to see everything. Or you could opt for a bus pass like this one -snip- where you can hop on and off when you feel like it and combine the tour with independent travel. The bus pass will probably be more budget friendly as it lasts for up to 6 months,

Hope that helps!

Yeah, letting work know was a bit of a headache for me, but worked out fine in the end!! I wanted to get out to oz for xmas / new year but middle of jan was alot cheaper on the flights . . .

Hey,

Greyhound - sooo much cheaper and everyones in the same boat. You'll meet people on the bus / in hostels anyway.

Oz experience is a bit more 'planned' and if thats what worries you then theres backpacker travel agenty places (i.e. peterpans / tribal travel ) that will book your trip up for you, including flights, greyhound tickets, hostels, pick ups etc etc...which leaves you time to relax and enjoy your self. Wee bit more expensive than if u did it all yourself but less stress, more freedom and probably still a big bit cheaper than oz experience.

Everyone told me the same thing and I was adamant I wanted to do oz experience as wasnt keen on going it alone...but I was totally fine.

ENJOY! :)
