Cheapest of all would be to hitchhike, and it should be relatively easy as well to find useable lifts.

Train is possible, although not hugely straight forward. Due to guage issues, there are only 2 day through trains from Spain to France and these are more expensive. As such, it will be cheaper to buy a ticket from Barcelona to Port Bou/Cerbere (border), and from there to Nice. In addition to the border, you will have to change at least once more if you travel during the day.

The easiest is to travel to Ccerbere and get the direct night train from there - There's about an hour and a half wait, and its not the worlds most exciting place, but other than that is ok.

Another alternative would be coach - Eurolines run Barcelona to Marseille, and then train or bus from there, but i don't know more details.

The final idea would be to try a cheap flight. As a non flier i'm in no way an expert here, but am not aware of a direct flight. However, it may actually work out cheaper and maybe even quicker (!) to do something daft like fly via Paris or London and the cheapy hubs. If you book it ahead and get lucky, this will almost certainly be cheaper, and if you can get a flight out of Bacrelona itself, you then don't need to pay for transfers to Girona either.

From Amsterdam there are really cheap flights to Nice and to Barcelona. Check out if this is the same for Nice-Barcelona Barcelona-Nice. I'm not sure, but probably you will be able to find a cheap flight there. Good luck man

I've got to do this journey aswell.

I was thinking of Barcelona-Montpellier (4 1/2 hours) then Montpellier- Nice (4 hours)..

Does this seem sensible?

last year i did the same trip with my friends, but from nice to barcelona.
We used the trains which were fairly good value. We also spoke to a german guy who had managed to hitchhike his way across most of spain, and said that this was even easier to do in France, though im not sure i'd do it.
If you have to stop off at montpellier this is not a bad option, as it is quite a nice town with a great nightlife.
