Hi - I am planning an eight month long trip through most of South America starting in July. I have rough ideas as to where to go but I would like to know whether it is worth organising internal trips - Machu Picchu, Amazonian trips etc from here in advance or waiting till I get into the country in question and going from there with no fixed plans. Is this the same for internal flights as well? Which method is the cheapest?
I would definitively recommend to buy excursions and tickets in each country.
BTW I´ve been in Peruvian Amazonia, Macchu Pichu and Choquekiraw, as many Bolivian and Argentianian cities and towns as well, so I think I may help you, just write me.
Couldn't agree more with the previous advice, especially if you're on a budget. You can save thou$snds by purchasing excursions, etc. here vs. going through a U.S. travel agency. Besides, if you buy something now and decide to change your mind re: dates, locations, etc. the last thing you want is fixed dates.
Note however, you MUST purchase your Inca Trail excursion at least 35 days in advance (Peruvian law) and some are telling me that for the high season (June - Aug) 60 days in advance is the best. A quick Internet search and you'll find lots of companies through which you can reserve your spot on the Inca Trail. Good luck.
